Working for the Future | Youth Spotlight

For many, the only way out is through. The only way through is to look toward the future.

Moms like Micaela “Mickey” see a future of independence. She sees earning and saving her own money with a good job, driving and owning her own car, living in an apartment with her children. Most importantly, she sees being able to provide for her family.

“The only thing holding me back is getting a job,” she said.

With no place to go and no way to support her family, Mickey turned to a local all-women’s shelter—until she learned about Youth Emergency Services (YES). A mother of two, she immediately qualified for YES’ Mother Group Home (MGH) program. Through the program, residents live in a family-style space, while they receive parenting and independent living support, and work closely with a case manager to set and accomplish several goals.

Mickey spends her days at MGH working toward her ultimate goal of gaining independence. She submits job applications, studies for her upcoming driver’s test, attends program meetings, and cares for her young daughters—all with the support of the YES team.

“YES helps me so much,” Mickey said. “They take me to my appointments, drive me to my job interviews, help me with my job applications, and more.”

As YES brings her closer to independence, Mickey can supplement her long hours and hard work by enjoying free moments with her daughters.

“I keep busy through the YES program, but I love playing with my kids the best,” she said. “We love to go to the park, go on walks, and just be outside.”

Mickey, like so many of those who come to YES, is looking forward to a better future. Thanks to the support, the empowerment, and the sense of community she has found at YES, she can move toward that future—a future of independence and providing for her children—with confidence.
