From Corrections to Connection: John’s Journey to YES | Staff Spotlight

After more than 30 years working in corrections and security, John knew he wanted a change. While pursuing a social work degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), a professor’s connection led him to an internship with Youth Emergency Services (YES).

That summer, John spent his time at YES’s Emergency Shelter—maintaining the space, leading groups, and building relationships with the youth staying there. Through those interactions, he gained a deeper understanding of the challenges homeless youth face.

“I understood adult homelessness, but not youth,” he shares. “I didn’t realize some parents actually put their kids out at 16 or 17 and tell them not to come back—that was shocking.”

YES’s mission, leadership, and growing impact continued to draw John in. What began as a one-off internship quickly became something more. When a position opened after his graduation, John knew this was where he was meant to be.

Now serving full-time as our Programs Manager, John supports policy development, facility maintenance, and accreditation efforts—but what he still loves most is connecting with the youth.

“Being someone they can talk to about heavy stuff means a lot,” he says. “They don’t always feel important elsewhere, so I remember their names, their stories. I want them to know they matter.”

For John, the most rewarding part of his work is watching youth overcome barriers and achieve their goals—big or small—all while working alongside a team that inspires him.

“The staff is great—that’s what makes this job enjoyable. They make me look forward to coming to work every day.”
