2004-2008: Expanding Our Programs

2004-2008—expanding our programs.

In addition to providing temporary shelter for Omaha’s homeless youth, Youth Emergency Services (YES) sought other ways to support young people in crisis.

In 2004, YES opened our first Drop-In Center—what would eventually become the Street Outreach Center—to provide immediate support to youth seeking resources, including food, clothing, and health checkups, as well as referrals to other local agencies for additional assistance.

2008 saw YES extend shelter services to long-term housing programs: the Transitional Living Program and the Maternity Group Home. Through both programs, youth receive up to 18 months of residence in independent living-style apartments. There, they learn to become independent, while also continuing to meet with designated case managers to set and achieve diverse goals. The Maternity Group Home puts focus on providing parenting education and family resources.

The implementation of these programs and the Drop-In Center helped shape YES into the youth-focused support system we know today. Find out more as we continue to share more stories from YES’ 50-year legacy!
