From Kalisha’s Desk—February Edition
In February, Black History Month supports and celebrates the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. Youth Emergency Services (YES) is dedicated to supporting Black youth facing homelessness and instability. In our efforts to create a community where every young person can thrive independently, YES focuses on amplifying diverse voices, stories, and experiences.
Of the diverse spectrum of homeless and near-homeless young people YES supports, 68% identify as BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color). Throughout February and beyond, we stand in solidarity with our Black youth and communities to advocate for a better future for all. Join YES in our commitment to uplifting, supporting, and celebrating the diverse voices of our community with some or all of the ideas below.
Amplify Black Voices
Speak out against injustice and amplify diverse experiences; find inspiration at the Malcolm X Memorial in North Omaha. Additionally, explore the rich history at the Great Plains Black History Museum, enjoy cultural events at the Union for Contemporary Art.
Support Black-Owned Businesses
Combat systemic inequality by supporting Black entrepreneurs and businesses—there are many great Black-owned business and restaurants throughout Omaha like the Holloway Experience, Status, Okra African Grill, and House of Bah.
Donate to Support BIPOC Youth
Support YES in our mission to provide safe housing and essential services to BIPOC youth.
Together, let's ensure every youth feels the warmth of love and support.
